FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT DO YOU TEACH?
In our classes you learn all the punches and kicks of karate, we also teach takedowns and ground fighting. Additionally, there are a number of practical weapons to learn, such as the double stick (escrima), the jo (4ft staff) and the bokken (wooden sword). Both the jo and the bokken very much resemble a walking stick, which is something you can legally carry in your car, unlike many of the weapons of some styles.
WHY IS YOUR SCHOOL NAMED LION OF JUDAH?
In Christian tradition, the lion is often assumed to represent Jesus. Many Christian organizations and ministries use the lion of Judah as their emblem or name. We chose to use it to let the community know that we are a Christian school.
WHY DO YOU CALL YOUR STYLE OF MARTIAL ARTS SEKAI-RYU?
Sekai means "world" and ryu mean "style". The name "world style" goes along with our philosophy that there is good to be found in all martial arts and a student must only look to find it. That is why we include techniques from Okinawa, Japan, China, the Philippines and America in our curriculum.
IS THERE A REASON YOUR CLASSES ARE SEPARATED BY AGE GROUPS?
We try to teach age appropriate self-defense techniques and lessons in each class. This ensures that what is taught in the small kids' class is just right for them, and what is taught in the adult classes is suitable for adults.
IS THERE A Special TIME OF MONTH I SHOULD JOIN?
No, a person can sign up for classes at any time during the month. We pro-rate the fees so that you only pay for the remainder of your sign-up month.
DO YOU REQUIRE YOUR STUDENTS TO SIGN A LONG-TERM CONTRACT?
No, we do not require contracts at our school. That way, if for some reason you find you have to quit, you do not have to keep paying for a class you are not coming to.
WHAT ARE YOUR CLASS FEES?
We try to keep our class fees very affordable, compared to other schools. That way, children from all incomes are able to attend. Class prices start at $45.00 per month. Prices are designed to meet the needs of the student.
WHAT DO I WEAR TO CLASS?
Your first few classes you should just wear something you can move around in, such as sweatpants and a T-shirt. When you join the class, you will pay an equipment fee, which includes your class uniform (karate pants and class T-shirt). Equipment fees are very affordable.
SINCE YOUR SCHOOL IS A FAITH- BASED SCHOOL, DO I HAVE TO BE A CHRISTIAN TO JOIN?
No, you do not have to be a Christian to join. Anyone is welcome, as long as you have an open mind and are willing to listen and talk about whatever the class may be discussing. We invite all the students to share, ask questions, and give their viewpoint.
DO I HAVE TO BE IN GREAT PHYSICAL SHAPE TO JOIN CLASS?
Yes and no. Some physical strength is required, of course, for the martial arts, but we feel that strength of mind is the most important factor. Any weakness in the body can be worked through or around if you set your mind to it. (Instructors are very flexible in working with our students at all physical levels).
